We've run into a few people here whose approach to speaking Chinese is basically to fake it. Which is actually easier than it sounds. The key is really nodding ambiguously when spoken to and muttering the occasional "yes" just to keep things dynamic. For extra points keep your partner unclear whether you're really engaging in conversation with them or simply talking to yourself. And try to avoid buying things until the price comes down on its own.

While the listening exercises on the HSK are pretty effective at weeding out people who don't actually understand Chinese, they're also quite challenging even for even serious students with considerably study time under their belt. In this practice HSK test, listen as we hear the first sentence in a brief conversation. Your challenge is to pick the only sensible response. These listening exercises move at a fast pace and do not repeat. So good luck!

I find the lesson is at a fast pace. I am a total beginner and am not able to benefit from the classes.

Hi Julie,

Have you tried our lessons for Absolute Beginners? We aim to make them all accessible to people with little to no mandarin background. You can browse all of the lessons at this level by visiting:

http://popupchinese.com/lessons/absolute-beginners/

The HSK is the standard proficiency test operated by the Chinese government. Their beginner level targets people with about 600 to 800 hours of Chinese language study under their belt, which is about the equivalent of a full year or two of Chinese language study depending on where and how you do it.

The HSK Beginner tests here are probably suitable for people between our Elementary and Intermediate levels.

Of all the absolute beginner lessons, I think this one is my favorite.

It's amazing to see how far Popup Chinese has come in the last year. Just looking at the archives I see about fifty lessons at the newbie level. I think when I first found you guys you had between ten and twenty.

Hi-

In the test, will we have the answer choices in front of us, or do we only have the audio to go by?

Thanks!

@kara,

If you are a subscriber, click on "quiz", and all the answer choices are there.

不客气!

第一题和第二题没听声音,而且我真想你们在答案页也写了问题特别有用的。questions 1 and 2 had no sound, i think it would be very helpful to write out the questions on the answer page.

@nadasax - thanks - we'll get that taken care of. Working on the next version of the site now. Will see if we can add some way of toggling audio questions on/off. We don't want to make them apparent by default as that works against the listening comprehension bit (some people would be too reliant on the text) but it's definitely a reasonable request to be able to check what one's heard.

I also favor adding text for the questions to the written worksheet. It would be especially helpful for the intermediate HSK test snippits, which because they are above my level, are difficult for me to discern some words and phrases.

Thanks again for the HSK content - its rigor and challange have improved my learning experience.

I have been taking Chinese for years, and can hold a conversation pretty well. I still find these tests difficult. Not everyone talks as fast as those featured in the audio snippets, and a lot of comprehension comes from context. I think test taking strategy is probably very important to pass.

In the real test don't you have the list of answers to choose from as you listen?

If not, this is still a great way to test listening, because you can learn to reject the answers that have nothing to do with the convo.
