Hey,

I feel like I'm getting good at the tones but my vocabulary isnt there yet.

Has anyone found any decent vocab lists for the most frequently spoken chinese words?

Thanks

Dear Ross,

Have you tried memrise.com? They have a lists for high frequency spoken words. Here are the first 1000: http://www.memrise.com/course/1224/chinese-words-by-spoken-frequency-0-1000-2/

However, I strongly recommend learning words in context. Every time you learn a new word, find at least 10 varied sentences incorporating that word.It is the only way to learn appropriate usage. Popup Chinese is indispensable in that respect as you get to see and hear how words are used in a useful dialogue format. The humour of the dialogues definitely helps with retention. Anyways, all the best!

Or try Skritter. It helps a lot with writing and it has many lists, high frequency as well as HSK and also the vocabulary from a number of text books.

Hey Adam,

I tried Anki before but not memrise, it looks good so thanks. They have quite a few different lists to choose from. Would you say this was the best set you've seen?

I agree varying the learning styles will help. I just feel like if I knew a bit more vocab first then I could at least be able to say something/recognise more of what is said, even if the grammar or usage is out.

Loving the podcast but finding the jump from absolute beginner to elementary is tough.

Thanks again!

Hi, Ross, I came across this book "The New HSK Dictionary: Full 5000 Words with Sample Sentences and Pinyin," which could be a great help to you. Just search it on Amazon.com,or just follow this link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013QFWACQ, and you can also send sample pages to your kindle reading app for a preview.
